Pediatric dentistry in Guatemala

At Ismile Guatemala, we understand that children’s dental health is the foundation for a healthy smile throughout their lives. Our pediatric dentistry service is designed to offer preventive, educational, and therapeutic care from the first months of life through adolescence, with a professional, friendly approach tailored to each child’s needs.

Pediatric dentistry not only treats existing dental problems, but also prevents their appearance through parent education, fluoride application, fissure sealants, and monitoring of dental and craniofacial development. Our team works in a multidisciplinary manner to ensure that every child receives the best care in a friendly and safe environment.

When Should the First Visit to the Pediatric Dentist Be?

The first dental visit should take place at one year of age or within six months after the eruption of the first tooth, according to the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). This early visit allows for the detection of feeding and sucking habits that may affect dental development, educates parents about oral hygiene, and establishes a “dental home” for ongoing monitoring of the child.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

During the first visit, our pediatric dentist will:

  • Examine your baby’s gums, teeth, and oral structure.
  • Assess breastfeeding habits, bottle use, and pacifier use.
  • Teach age-appropriate brushing techniques.
  • Identify risk factors for early tooth decay.

Answer all your questions about nutrition, teething, and home care.

Establishing this early relationship reduces dental anxiety and facilitates future treatments, as well as preventing diseases that could compromise your child’s overall health.

Fluoride in Children: Is It Safe? When Should It Be Used?

Fluoride is a key mineral in preventing tooth decay, as it strengthens tooth enamel and reverses early lesions. However, its use must be supervised to avoid fluorosis (stains on the teeth caused by excess fluoride).

    Toothpaste Recommendations by Age

    • 0 to 3 years: Toothpaste with 1000 ppm fluoride, amount of a grain of rice, twice a day.
    • 3 to 6 years: Toothpaste with 1000–1500 ppm fluoride, amount of a pea, twice a day, with supervision.
    • Over 6 years old: Toothpaste with 1450 ppm of fluoride, pea-sized amount, twice a day.

At Ismile, we educate each family on toothpaste selection and safe brushing techniques, tailored to the child’s age and individual needs.
